The first two kata that we learn in GKR Karate are known as Taigyoku Shodan and Taigyoku Nidan, but they are more commonly referred to as First and Second kata.
While the idea of learning two kata may be daunting, both are identical in their pattern, with the only difference between each is the addition of a front kick in the Second kata. Each of these kata are 20 counts long and comprise of only:
- One stance (long forward stance – zenkutsu-datchi).
- One block (groin block – gedan barai).
- One punch (stomach level punch – chudan tsuki).
- One kick (front kick – mae geri).
A Long forward stance (zenkutsu dachi) is used through all 20 counts of First kata.
