The first weekend in August was setup for one of the biggest events in the GKR calendar and also for many firsts in GKR’s history. It was the first time the World Cup was hosted in Queensland, Australia. It was the first time GKR attempted and qualified for a Guinness World Record and the first time to be actively involved in helping someone else break another Guinness World Record.

Wow! What a spectacular weekend the GKR Karate World Cup 8 in Liverpool was. Three days of the absolute best competition that GKR has to offer. Congratulations to everyone that won a medal over the weekend, especially our World Champions, fantastic effort!

Over 1100 people from across Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Houston, Texas came together to showcase the best that GKR has to offer. The level of sportsmanship, camaraderie and friendship was on display right from the start, with an impressive opening ceremony that had everyone on their feet!

This year GKR conducted its 5th World Cup in Australia, at Melbourne's State Netball and Hockey Centre. The event was so big that it required using both of the Centre's two large stadiums.

Unquestionably the premier event on the 2007 GKR calendar, World Cup IV proved another major success drawing over 1600 competitors and countless more spectators from around the globe of GKR. Coming together in Birmingham’s prestigious National Indoor Arena (NIA), June 2nd and 3rd provided an action packed weekend with 21 rings running non-stop, as GKR’s best battled it out for the honour of being crowned World Champion.

The date was set… The venue spectacular…The third Go-Kan-Ryu bi-annual World Cup was upon us. 1700 + competitors from four countries converged on the State Sports Centre, in the Sydney Olympic district to decide… Who would be the next Go-Kan-Ryu World Champion?

Competitors came from all parts of the GKR world. In total we had between 1100 and 1200 competitors and a few thousand spectators cheering on all those who had the courage to enter. The venue was 'world class' with a huge floor area that housed 15 matted rings with plenty of room for officials and competitors.

This first World Cup saw 1230 GKR competitors from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom compete over a memorable weekend. The atmosphere was literally electrifying, with competitors, their families, the officials and special guests enjoying two days of action packed karate.
